Historic Porterdale Gymnasium
Designed by female architect Ellamae Ellis League, the Porterdale Gymnasium was built in 1938. Three quarters of a century after it was first built, city officials hope the gym will reprise its role as community anchor, but in a different way. The gymnasium is going to be marketed as an event venue, to hopefully be revenue maker for the city. Garbutt Construction Company was contracted by the City of Porterdale to renovate this building that was once the heart of this community. In January 2014, Garbutt completed the bracing of the walls and foundation of this open-air event center. The new facility mow serves as an event venue and community center for Porterdale and surrounding residents. The re-use of the remains of the facility is cutting edge and demonstrates a great use of resources for small towns in the south.
