Milledgeville Old Train Depot
Milledgeville, Georgia
Sure,
it’s called the “Old Train Depot” now, but close
your eyes and you can almost see it as it was in it its nineteenth
century glory days, new and fresh and teaming with activity.
Milledgeville was the state capital then, the railway was the
mode of transportation,
and everyone who was anyone found himself traveling into Milledgeville,
Georgia at one time or another, especially once the Civil War
started. Jefferson Davis. Alex Stephens. Why even… … William
Tecumseh Sherman himself
passed right by it on his way through town.
Now
fast forward a hundred and forty years or so. The capital’s
long since moved to Atlanta, the days of rail transportation are gone
and the car is king, and years of neglect and decay have left the
Old Train Depot degraded and desolate, both its structure and its
infrastructure all but unsalvageable. That’s where Garbutt Construction
comes in. Along with architects Bradfield, Richards, Rhodes & Associates
and the facilities staff at Georgia College and State University,
Garbutt
Construction stepped in to save this vital depository of state
history and local lore.
Today the Georgia College and State
University students provide the depot with a different kind of
foot traffic—the kind that
happens on a treadmill—and “train” has taken on
an entire new meaning in this state of the art fitness and lifestyles
center.
