Pulaski County Courthouse
Hawkinsville, Georgia
Originally
built in 1874 with at least five subsequent major renovations, the
17,694 square foot Pulaski County Courthouse, which is listed on the
National Register of Historic Structures, presented Garbutt Construction
a real renovation challenge:
…to preserve the beauty and
the design integrity of the original construction
while accomplishing a total internal and external renovation of what is still
a busy, working facility.
After
carefully demolishing structural elements that would not survive restoration
and raising scaffolding to provide access to all three floors as well
as the building’s clock tower, the rebuilding process began.
Massive Greek Revival columns supporting the roofline were removed
and replaced. The tower clock was reworked and the copper dome completely
renovated. Countless decorative window heads, dentils, and other moldings
were restored. Old renovation work was removed to bring the balconied
courtroom back to its original splendor. An elevator was added, and
fire, safety, electrical and air conditioning components were brought
to a level that exceeds code requirement.
Were we successful? We think so.
Apparently other
people think so, too: the Pulaski County Courthouse Project was
a Build Georgia Award nominee and received an Award
of Excellence by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.
