First National Bank and Trust
Sandersville, Georgia

The soul of a
depression-era
post office,
the potential to be
a center of commerce.
Even though the 1930’s building had definitely seen better
days since its heyday as a depression-era post office, it was obvious
that lurking beneath the tattered façade its good, sturdy,
Federalist bone structure was pretty much intact. That’s
why First National Bank of Sandersville had the vision and the foresight
to take a chance on it. First National Bank called Garbutt,
of course, and they basically had one question:
Could Garbutt retain the historic value of the original
architecture
and yet still succeed in bringing the building’s function
forward into the 21st century?
The answer, it seems, was yes. Absolutely.
Utility, safety, and security features were the most important
aspects of the reconstruction, and installing a state of the art
bank vault was a necessity. Not only installing it, but doing so
while strictly maintaining the historical character that the building
was so rich with. And once all the functional work was successfully
done, there was still the original marble flooring, to be matched,
repaired, and refinished to the same beautiful luster it enjoyed
at its creation. An insurmountable undertaking? For some, perhaps.
For Garbutt, it’s all in a day’s work.
