Emanuel County Streetscape
Milledgeville, Georgia

The Sheriff’s Office used
to be
the last place you wanted to visit.
Today, it’s the first
That’s because the old Emanuel County Sheriff’s office
is now the brand new city-county welcome center, thanks to a very
successful ISTEA grant, the progressive citizenry of Swainsboro,
and Garbutt Construction Company.
The city slogan of Swainsboro
calls its intersection of US 1 and US 80 “Where Main Streets
Meet,” but today it’s
much more than simply the traditional place where north/south and
east/west travelers cross paths. The old county courthouse
which once stood there might be gone, but in its place is a beautiful
new streetscape, featuring not only the refurbished welcome center,
but also a serene central park, replete with fountain and beautiful
landscaping.
The loafer’s bench?
You’ll probably want to visit that, too.
After all, the loafer’s bench was an important tradition
in the old town square, as were the memorials that were found
there. That’s why we at Garbutt were intent upon
effectively incorporating them into the new streetscape design,
and why we’ll always do everything within our power to
retain and to feature the rich history that’s inherent
in any site we work on.
