From its opening in January 1921 until its closing 30 years later, The Rylander served as a civic and cultural center for the Southwest Georgia area, hosting traveling troupes and vaudevillian performers as well as musical and cinematic releases. In 1995, when the City of Americus organized to save the long-vacant Rylander, Garbutt Construction started work with the goal of honoring the Rylander’s past by meticulously restoring its charm and character.
Removing modifications that had divided the building into rented office and retail space, special attention was given to updating plumbing, electrical, air conditioning and safety features. Before long, 40 years of damage, deterioration and neglect disappeared, and Americus had one of its most unique historical buildings back, breathing new life into downtown. In recognition of the excellence of the renovation, Garbutt Construction received the Build Georgia Award from the Associated General Contractors of America as well as the Award of Excellence from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.
