The old governor’s mansion was home to eight governors and the seat of power in Georgia from the antebellum period through the Civil War and into the Reconstruction era. It’s considered one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the entire country.
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973, the restoration effort for the mansion required years of detailed research and compliance to a rigid set of standards issued by the Secretary of the Interior in Washington.
Garbutt Construction refurbished the structure inside and out, including the installation of new infrastructure for mechanical and electrical systems. Today, the historic governor’s mansion looks as it must have looked to those early Georgia leaders. It stands as a grand monument to Milledgeville and Georgia’s past.
